The Magic of Arran
Arran’s magical magnetism has a strong effect on all who visit the island. The minute you step off the ferry at Brodick Pier you feel it – “Ah! I’m here!” you think. Cares and worries fall away, and relaxation and a slower pace of life beckon.
Of course, living here on Arran includes all the usual day-to-day clutter of bills, work and so on, but taking a break from it all is easy. A round of golf after work; a stroll on the beach at lunchtime; a walk in the hills at the weekend – all of these recreations are enjoyed as much by islanders as they are by visitors. Participants in the village fun week events in the summer are as likely to live here as to be holidaymakers.
Through the winter the entertainments include concerts, dances and parties as islanders unwind after the summer season. Rehearsals also get under way for new dramatic productions in the spring. In fact, island residents are often busier through the winter than in the summer as the social scene hots up. Long winter evenings are filled with music, visits are exchanged and supper parties enjoyed. In addition to the Christmas and New Year festivities, St Andrew’s Day and Burns Night provide a focus for more celebration and socialising.
The island’s population has grown steadily over the past twenty years thanks, in part, to visitors who have decided to make Arran their home for good. As well as the families who have grown up on Arran, there are many who have moved here because of family connections, either in their family history, or in the present.
The family connection is a strong part of Arran Aromatics’ culture, too. The Russell family are still very much involved in the day-to-day running of the company, from design, through management and manufacturing to marketing. Families are very much a part of the rest of the team, here, too, with husband and wife, mother and daughter, brother and sister, uncle and niece, all working alongside one another to bring you our products.
If you can’t get to Arran for a spot of relaxation, then pampering yourself with Arran Aromatics products is the next best thing. Each of us has our favourite range, and there is always keen interest in the office to learn about the new projects in the pipeline, and to offer opinions on future fragrance choices.
For many of us, the new Just Grapefruit range is a refreshing change for this year, and the intense fragrances and luscious lather of the Organic Soaps range have also proved very popular. Bay Citrus, though bought by the boys, is frequently “borrowed” by the ladies, who also love its spicy, woody notes. For some, Essential Lavender, with its fresh herbal take on an established classic is a reminder of the sun drawing scents from the cottage garden border; for others the practical, minimal packaging and complimentary fragrances of the Feel Good Formulasare tops; our perennial classic After the Rain, inspired by the frequent showers that keep Arran so green, continues in popularity, while others prefer the subtle perfume of Angelica. The Parfumeur candles, with their palette of distinctive, lasting aromas, and the Baby Feel range are frequent and well-liked gift choices. Which is your favourite?
